The steps of a man are established by the Lord and he delights in His way. When he falls, he will not be cast down, because the Lord is the one who holds his hand.
Ps. 37:23-24
Dear Families, Caregivers and Students,
There have been many occasions throughout the term where I have been reminded of how lucky we are to live in South Australia during these unusual times. The world is a changed place. Fairly close, across the border, life is very different. As a school we have returned to normal activities with only minor changes still in place to ensure safe covid practice. I can’t keep thanking families enough for your support to ensure a covid safe school environment for everyone within the OLOR community. As a parent I understand it can be difficult to juggle family and work commitments whilst having to keep children home when they are a little unwell, but it is better to be cautious.
Student safety continues to be of high importance to me. With school activities back to normal and parents allowed to enter school grounds it has come to my attention that during pick up children continue to enter cars in the forty five degree parking on Verran Terrace without a parent leaving the car. Although this was appropriate during times of strict covid restrictions with staff supervising students getting into cars safely, this now poses a safety risk. I remind you to only park on Verran Terrace if you intend come into the school to pick up your children. I urge you to use the kiss and drop on MacIntosh Road to pick up your children without a need to leave the car. Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.
Thanks to our lucky position here in South Australia the Year 3 camp to Monarto Zoo was able to go ahead this week. Students and staff equally enjoyed all the wonderful activities and animals that Monarto has to offer. The benefits of going on camp are numerous; they provide opportunities for children to develop new skills, friendships and interests. I personally love going on school camps and I know how rewarding the experience is to all learners. Student behaviour was excellent and the students represented the school with pride in the public arena.
What began in February as preparation for the annual Riverland Music Festival with a live performance in the Chaffey Theatre was changed to become a covid safe event and was called the ‘Festival choir SAPSASA’. Using the model of schools coming together for sport, this year the choirs joined in Waikerie to celebrate their achievement and perform together without an audience. The performance was, however, professionally recorded and will become available for families to download. I congratulate all members of the OLOR choir who represented the school extremely well at the event.
At the start of 2020 I expressed the significance that lifelong learning holds for learners of all ages. Lifelong learning recognises that humans have a natural drive to explore, grow, set goals and improve quality of life. Learning gives a sense of self-worth by paying attention to ideas that inspire us. I am completing my Masters of Educational Leadership at ACU this semester with a research into the assessment of Religious Education in our school to identify ways to improve it. I am very grateful to staff for supporting this research.
Fr Cletus Mloka is booked to return to Tanzania on Thursday 17th September. His visa expires in early October, and advantage is taken of whatever flights are available to Africa at the moment. There will be opportunities for everyone to thank and farewell Fr Cletus for his contributions to our community in the coming weeks.
This week Alhannah, Slater, Miley, Amity and Bella were in Adelaide where they represented the school in SAPSASA soccer and SAPSASA hockey. They have had a fantastic week of competing while learning new skills and making new friends.
Next weekend we celebrate the fathers in our lives. This year, in this changed world, I am thinking of every dad and father like figure who longs to cover their children in the safety of his presence.
Fathers are brave and bold and strong. Fathers are loving, compassionate and kind. Fathers are faithful. Fathers are warriors who know where real strength is found. Fathers are powerful in the lives of kids. Fathers have hero status. Fathers are their children’s solid foundation.
And although we’re not guaranteed a tomorrow, God has given us today. This day. Today I pray for God’s mighty blessing and strength to rest on all dads this Fathers’ day, and every day, as they seek to love well, live wisely and walk strong as they raise our children.
