2/3 Class Report

It has been another busy and exciting term in the Year 2/3 classroom!

A major highlight was the Year 3 overnight sleepover at Monarto Safari Park.
In Week 6, 15 excited students boarded the bus to Monarto, where their adventure began with a walking tour of the park. They spotted chimpanzees, elephants, meerkats and rhinos—fun fact: two of the chimpanzees are older than some of our teachers! The group then enjoyed a guided safari bus tour, getting an up-close look at animals such as giraffes, bison, lions and cheetahs.
After arriving at their accommodation, students unpacked and spent the evening building shelters, joining a night walk, and roasting marshmallows by the bonfire. The next morning, they became “zookeepers,” helping tend the bison enclosure for 15 minutes—work that would have taken the staff days to complete! Tired but happy, everyone climbed back on the bus with wonderful memories. I was so proud of how the students represented OLOR with kindness, respect and resilience throughout the trip.

We have been learning about how our behaviour changes depending on where we are and who we are with, a skill we now call code-switching. Just like a computer switches programs to complete different tasks, or a chameleon changes its colours to blend into its surroundings, people adjust their actions, words and even body language to suit different situations. For example, the way we talk and play on the playground might be very different to how we listen and speak in the classroom or during a school assembly. We discussed why this is important—it helps us show respect, stay safe and communicate effectively in different settings, while still being our true selves. To bring this idea to life, students created bright, personalised chameleons as a visual reminder of when and how to “switch” appropriately. These colourful artworks are now proudly displayed in our classroom as a daily prompt to think about our choices and interactions.
We are very much looking forward to an extremely busy Term 4!
