Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
Psalm 27:14
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
WOW! What a couple of weeks it has been. I may (or may not) have done a 3-sixty on the kneeboard at the Year 4 camp last week, but together we undoubtedly have done a 3-sixty in school with last week’s hard lockdown. Words are starting to fail me as I search for ways to express my sincere and honest gratitude for the support that you have shown the school.
I welcomed the news being able to return to face-to-face teaching and learning on Monday this week. This truly is the best model for all our students and for us. Despite returning to school, some restrictions continue to impact school activities in the coming two weeks.
Restrictions the school needs to consider with regards to events are:
- Minimising the number of adults in attendance
- Avoiding communal food and drinks
The above considerations mainly impact Christmas Carols and Year 7 Graduation. Christmas Carols were planned for Monday 30th November. The live presentation of this event has been cancelled but Mrs Jenni Sander is working hard to put together a Christmas Carol movie, featuring all students and staff in the school. This change will take extra time and the 2020 Christmas Carols movie will therefore ‘air’ on Monday 7th December (week 9).
Year 7 graduation is going ahead in the school hall on Thursday 3rd December (week 8). This year students are able to invite their parents and siblings to the live event. The graduation will be also be filmed and is going to be made available to everyone in the community.
SA Health has directed that all school camps planned before the end of the 2020 school year need to be approved by their COVID response team before being allowed to proceed. As a result the Year 7 graduation camp to Adelaide is not allowed to go ahead. To celebrate their graduation, Year 7 students will take part in two excursions within our beautiful Riverland region.
On Monday a letter from Mrs Ros Oates went home to all families which outlined the class structure for 2021.

A whole school transition day is planned for Friday 4th December, when all students get the opportunity to be in their 2021 class groups and meet their teachers.
The year 4 camp was a success despite it’s on again and off again nature because of COVID restrictions. All students participated wholeheartedly in all activities and were simply delightful throughout the three days. I extent my gratitude to James Preece and Bre Michalski for all the work they did with students before, during and after the camp. What a wonderful celebration of their year.
The South Australian Commission for Catholic Schools (SACCS) is pleased to announce the formation of Catholic School Parents SA as the new representative body of Catholic school parents. In 2020, the Commission engaged an independent reviewer to consult with parents in all Catholic schools to seek their feedback as to whether they felt they had an adequate voice in the education of their children and what kind of support they would like to see in the future.
The new group will:
- Engage in a program of listening to the needs of parents across Catholic schools
- Advocate for improved funding and support for children and young people in Catholic schools and preschools
- Ensure parent voice in policy development
- Represent parents on a range of committees and working parties
- Participate in the work of Catholic School Parents Australia.
As a school we will receive further information early in 2021.
At the beginning of 2020, after I first took on my role as Principal of Our Lady of the River School I expressed the importance of being a life-long learner. Life- long learning recognises that humans have a natural drive to explore, grow set goals and improve themselves. As I am coming to the end of my time at Our Lady of the River School, I am seeking your feedback on my leadership this year. Feedback will help me shape my leadership into the future, allows me to grow and reflect on my time with you. I will send you a link to the survey via text and I appreciate you taking the time to complete it.
This Sunday is the first day of the Church’s season of advent. Advent is all about waiting, waiting for the coming of Christ. And while we wait we can learn and grow and become stronger than ever in our ideals and convictions. While we wait we can become attentive and creative. And no matter who wants to put us down or stop us from becoming who we are meant to be we can always be beacons of hope for others. Beacons that never go away until one day that star shines high in the sky.
Have a great weekend!
